Common Physical Disabilities in Children

Common Physical Disabilities in ChildrenWhen we talk about disabilities in children, a lot of people automatically assume you mean birth defects.  But, physical disabilities are more about what happens in the womb or after birth, sometimes it has to deal with childhood accidents, injuries or situations.  When it comes to disabilities though, either in the womb, out of the womb closely after being born or happening later on in life via accidents, there are some disabilities that plague children more than adults.  These disabilities can be found below, along with some information and statistics on each disability.

Hearing Disabilities

When it comes to hearing disabilities there are more issues nowadays than ever before – that’s a true statement by both parents as well as top teachers in NJ.  Hearing disabilities tend to deal a lot with hearing impairments or noise induced hearing loss.  This can happen because of a wide range of reasons, but it deals with trauma happening to the inside of the ear when dealing with things like loud music, loud noises, etc. things like having the TV too loud, having the radio too loud or even going to meetings where the noise is too loud can all damage the inside of your ear.  It can happen slowly at first, you tend to hear less things from across the room, up the steps, across the hall, etc.  Usually this isn’t a quick type of disability to happen, but there are of course exceptions to the rule.  For example, children that are living in certain countries where it’s made mandatory to join the Army may deal with explosions and gun shots, these things can happen quickly and with one situation rather than slowly and over time.  In most cases, especially these days, even if a child has a hearing impairment, it can be fixed with the thanks of technology and amazingly smart people that study things like how to fix hearing impairments.  One of the most important things as a parent is to make sure your kids get current hearing tests done and that they get them done at least once a year to make sure they do not have or do not get hearing problems.

Visual Impairments

People tend to think that kids these days have more and more visual impairments than ever before.  Personally, I think it’s less about more kids having more issues these days, and just the availability of technology that is readily and conveniently available to schools, doctors and parents these days.  We are getting smarter and smarter and because of that, more and more machines and products are making themselves available to help doctors and parents see if their kids have visual issues.  This can be everything from common everyday visual impairments where you need glasses or contacts, it can deal with certain diseases which bring with them vision loss, or it can also deal with accidents and injuries that happen every single day.  A lot of people these days have vision problems.  In fact, the American Foundation for the Blind has said that over 10 million people in the United States alone are visually impaired either because of birth defects, everyday life or accidents.

Birth Defects

Physical impairments usually happen while a baby is still in its mother’s womb, but it can also happen after birth or once the child grows a little older due to accidents or injuries.  Birth defects however, usually happen either one of two places; in the womb while the mother is pregnant, or out of the womb after the baby has been induced.  Birth defects deal with all sorts of impairments such as the ones above, or inner body impairments like spinal cord injuries, missing limbs, skeletal issues, conjoined twins, joint impairments, muscle impairments and more.  Some of the most common birth defects or diseases include things like Cystic Fibrosis, Spina Bifida, Mental Retardation which attacks the brain, etc.  Birth defects can have a wide impact on the way a child thinks, learn, speaks or reads, but in a lot of cases, especially with today’s technology, these defects and diseases can be slow down, stopped entirely, or they can be made to make the child try to live a more normal life i.e.; handicap chairs that speak for them or type for them.
